Can AI replace physicians in cardiology?

This year’s annual Austrian Society of Cardiology Conference (ASC) was all about “art@heart: Cardiology between Medical Skill Art and Artificial Intelligence”. AMOMED was honored to be one of the sponsors of the event.

Can AI replace physicians in cardiology?

Domestic and foreign cardiologists met in the halls of the Salzburg Congress, to exchange ideas about the synergy of patient care by healthcare professionals and high-tech opportunities of artificial intelligence (AI) via lectures, poster presentations and during networking gatherings

The working groups of the association included among others:

  • Cardiovascular basic scientific research and intensive care medicine
  • Echocardiography
  • Heart surgery and heart failure
  • Interventional cardiology
  • Cardiological assistance and care staff

The program of the conference, which lasted several days, covered a wide range of topics within the field of cardiology:

  • Artificial heart valves
  • The morbid patient with multiple cardiovascular diagnoses
  • Cardiac imaging
  • Cardiovascular biology
  • Rhythmology
  • Medical skill art v. evidence-based
  • Precision medicine – new technologies

Opportunities, Risks and the Human Touch

While technology and digitalization through monitoring, 3D models, Apps (think step counting and running Apps, as well as diet and nutrition Apps) and learned algorithms are of enormous help in prevention, patent care and anticipating the patent’s development, the physician’s personal – human – contact to the patient and the patient’s family remains imperative. Furthermore, only a few know how to interpret the data that they receive from these technological advances without any medical background.

As with many other aspects of our daily life, data protection and privacy concerns can also not be ignored in this case; quite the opposite: cyber crime is an even more sensitive issue in healthcare.

Artificial Intelligence and its developments will definitely continue to be a hot topic going forward – not just in the area of cardiology but also in other parts of the medical field.

AMOMED @ ASC

Our Head of Medical Science Liaison Dr. med. Hugo Leodolter and our Austrian sales team represented AMOMED Pharma at the Austrian Society of Cardiology Conference. Not only the event itself welcomed a large number of visitors but also our booth attracted a lot of attendees.
