Knowing-Showing-Doing: Train-the-Trainer Simulation Workshop

Being a partner for health care professionals is the first and foremost priority of Amomed Pharma along with providing top quality, life-saving medicinal products. In this context, we believe it is essential to offer physicians and medical personnel workshops that allow for hands-on experiences. In the past, Amomed Pharma has organized simulation (SIM) workshops to train health care professionals how to handle specific scenarios in intensive care and emergency settings.

These workshops have found great popularity, however, this year it was time to go a step further: we want to establish centers of excellence. Utilizing the help of external SIM-training companies, we invite physicians not only to be trained on certain scenarios but to become trainers themselves.

In April 2018, Amomed hosted its first train-the-trainer SIM-workshop in Vienna with the support of InPASS (Institute for Patient Safety and Team Training) and Helios Klinikum Hildesheim. Over the course of three days, participants from five countries from the CEE region learned how to effectively train and pass on knowledge to their staff and colleagues within their hospitals.

To err is human

The workshop was based on Miller’s Pyramid of Clinical Competence (Knowing->Knowing How-> Showing How ->Doing), the essential need to be motivated to make changes in behavior, the necessity of teamwork and the belief that we all make mistakes and can learn from them. It is human to make mistakes – even more so when under stress – however, mistakes decrease through ongoing training. Just like Olympians, everyone improves their performances by practicing.

Using a patient-dummy that can simulate life-like attributes (sweating, having a pulse, etc), a fully equipped hospital room and observation cameras, participants took turns actively working through the simulated scenario or observing it.

At the heart of the training was the debriefing session following each scenario with a focus on examining the actions taken from the point of view of the instructor, as it is important not to only mention what needs to be improved but also to learn from the positive experiences.
