During the annual congress of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology (EACTA), cardiac surgery experts met on September 5, 2019 in Ghent, Belgium, to discuss the use of vasopressors in cardiac surgery patients. This meeting was supported by AMOMED Pharma.
How should vasopressors be used in cardiac surgery settings?
EACTA President Prof. Dr. Fabio Guarracino from the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine of the University Hospital of Pisa in Italy welcomed the 13 experts from six different countries and thanked them for joining the meeting. Their insights from daily clinical life were essential for discussing the options for the use of vasopressors in connection with the development of vasoplegia in cardiac surgery patients during the surgical procedure.
Vasopressors are often drugs that can increase blood pressure by narrowing small blood vessels.
Vasoplegia describes a malfunction of the blood vessels, whereby the smallest blood vessels are no longer able to maintain blood pressure due to a pathological dilatation.
The meeting was dedicated to the management of and treatment optimization for these patients. Prof. Dr. Matthias Heringlake from the Department of Anaesthesiology of the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein in Lübeck led through the lively discussion.
During this intensive, peer-to-peer expert debate, each indication and each option was thoroughly looked at based on available medical evidence and clinical experience.

Prevention of post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) – What is the value of landiolol?
After a short break, the meeting continued with a presentation by Prof. Heringlake about Prevention of Post-Operative Atrial Fibrillation – Evidence, Experience and Future Role of Landiolol. POAF is an underestimated risk factor associated with a reduced overall and increased risk for developing acute kidney injury, cardiac failure and stroke.
